This manual is written as a guide for use by farmers intending to sustainably intensify their smallholder cropping systems involving food and cash crops such as cassava, maize, sorghum and millet as well as common beans, cowpea, groundnut, pigeon pea, soybean and agro-forestry species, amongst others. The manual intends to enable farmers to increase their productivity while achieving food security and nutrition. It provides general guidelines for farmers based on the experiences of various sustainable intensification projects in Southern Africa and more specifically, to the Sustainable intensification of Smallholder Farming Systems (SIFAZ) Project in Zambia. This manual is particularly applicable to smallholder farms that share the same agro-ecological conditions as the mid-altitude mixed-maize production areas found in Southern Africa.

The authors describe how a policy shift to focus on consumer needs can transform the agrifood system to deliver healthier and more affordable diets for all Nigerians, as well as better and more secure rural livelihoods.

Society has just begun to tap new renewable sources of energy from agriculture and forestlands on a commercial scale that impacts energy markets. Among these sources are biofuels, a small but important component of current fuel consumption in the U.S. transport sector. In 2012, biofuels accounted for roughly 7.1 percent of total transport fuel consumption, or 13.8 billion gallons, unchanged from the previous year. Ethanol, made mostly from corn starch from kernels, is by far the most significant biofuel in the United States, accounting for 94 percent of all biofuel production in 2012. Most of the remainder is biodiesel, which is made from vegetable oils (chiefly soy oil) as well as animal fats, waste oils, and greases. The U.S. Bioenergy Statistics are a source of information on biofuels intended to present a picture of the renewable energy industry and its relationship to agriculture. Where appropriate, data are presented in both a calendar year and the relevant marketing year timeframe to increase utility to feedstock-oriented users. The statistics highlight the factors that influence the demand for agricultural feedstocks for biofuels production; for instance, numerous tables emphasize the relationship between energy and commodity markets. ERS analysts track U.S. ethanol and biodiesel production, consumption, and trade. They also monitor and analyze U.S. bioenergy policy and events that affect the domestic and international biofuel and feedstock markets. Additional tables will be added as new series become available.
[行业报告 ] Sustainable Food Systems and Nutrition in the 21st Century: A report from the 22nd Annual Harvard Nutrition Obesity Symposium 进入全文

Food systems are at the center of a brewing storm consisting of a rapidly changing climate, rising hunger and malnutrition and significant social inequities. At the same time, there are vast opportunities to ensure that food systems produce healthy and safe food in equitable ways that promote environmental sustainability, especially if the world can come together at the UN Food Systems Summit in late 2021 and make strong and binding commitments towards food system transformation. The NIH-funded Nutrition Obesity Research Center at Harvard and the Harvard Medical School Division of Nutrition held their 22nd Annual Harvard Nutrition Obesity Symposium entitled “Global Food Systems and Sustainable Nutrition in the 21st Century” in June 2021. This paper presents a synthesis of this symposium and highlights the importance of food systems to address the burden of malnutrition and non-communicable diseases, climate change, and the economic and social inequities. Transformation of food systems is possible, and the nutrition and health communities have a significant role to play in this transformative process.

This inaugural 2021 Global Food 50/50 Report, a joint initiative of Global Health 50/50 and IFPRI, reviews the gender- and equity-related policies and practices of 52 global food system organizations in the food system from the public, private, and not-for-profit sectors around the world. The Global Food 50/50 initiative is a response to broad stakeholder demand for a global food system that is accountable for measurable and meaningful progress toward gender equality. This global mechanism will monitor progress and hold food system organizations accountable for achieving gender equality in leadership, adopting gender equitable internal workplace policies, and implementing strategies that advance progress toward gender-just and equitable food systems. Data relate to (1) inequality of opportunity in career pathways inside organizations and (2) inequality in who benefits from the global food system. The Report shows that organizational commitment to gender equality is high, and that over half of the organizations are transparent about their policies for shaping diverse, inclusive, and equitable working environments. However, organizational leadership remains disproportionately male.

This publication presents an in-depth analysis of the food system in Ghana with the dual purpose of providing an overview of the current situation, and identifying opportunities for leveraging the role of small and medium-sized enterprises for nutrition-sensitive food systems. The data collected and the results of the analysis enhance the understanding of some of the challenges that, in the Ghanaian context, contribute to determining diet-related issues; more importantly, the analysis identifies opportunities and entry points for improving diets by overcoming some of the challenges faced by small and medium-sized enterprises. The information provided could be of support not only for further analyses, but also for planning interventions and designing policies to improve nutrition in Ghana and in other contexts.
