[Problem] To provide a vertical hydroponics system and a vertical hydroponics method with which it is possible to prevent root rot of cultivated plants and efficiently cultivate plants while supplying small quantities of nutrient solution. [Solution] A vertical hydroponics system comprising: a vertical hydroponics cylinder 101 provided in a standing condition on the floor or suspended from the ceiling of a house； a culture medium 102 housed so as to be able to inserted into and withdrawn from the vertical hydroponics cylinder 101； and a nutrient solution-supplying means 104 which supplies nutrient solution 107 from the nutrient solution tank 103 to the culture medium 102. The vertical hydroponics cylinder 101 is equipped with, in the vertical direction thereof, a plurality of openings or one or more slits 111 for planting seedlings or seeds 106 of plants. The culture medium 102 comprises a water-retention sheet 121 and breathable materials 122 and 123 sandwiching both sides of the water-retention sheet 121.
