Disclosed herein are non-vascular photosynthetic organisms that have been modified by either knockdown or knockout of a gene. Methods of making the modified non-vascular photosynthetic organisms are also described herein. The modified non-vascular photosynthetic organisms are tolerant to being grown, cultured, or maintained in a solution that has a basic pH (greater than a pH of 7 but less than or equal to a pH of 14), for example, a pH of about 9 to about 12.Linvention concerne des organismes photosynthétiques non vasculaires qui ont été modifiés par affaiblissement ou invalidation dun gène.
