Disclosed herein are edible compositions comprising a terpene compound of formula (I) where X is O or S atom, the dashed line represents a double bond in E or Z confirmation and R is H, alkyl, alkenyl or alkynyl. The compositions also comprise KCl or potassium lactate where the compound or formula (I) reduces the bitter tasting effects of the potassium compound. Also disclosed are food products comprising such edible compositions and methods of preparing such food products. Also disclosed are methods of reducing the amount of NaCl in a food product, methods of reducing the sodium intake in a diet, and methods of reducing bitter taste in a food product using compositions comprising the compounds as described herein.
