PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a substance for inducing a mushroom fruit body formation, capable of increasing in yield of artificial culture of Pleurotus ostreatus, or the like, by making the material include betulin, or the like, as an active ingredient. SOLUTION: This substance comprises a betulin such as betulin obtained by extraction from a bark of a tree belonging to the genus Betula, or the like, or a glycoside obtained by bonding a saccharide chain to betulin as an active ingredient. Preferably, the substance comprises a betulin glycoside obtained by bonding one or more, preferably 1-5 glucose residues to betulin as an active ingredient. Preferably, a medium such as a malt agar medium containing preferably 0.2-1.0 mM of the substance for inducing a mushroom fruit body formation is inoculated with a strain of Pleurotus ostreatus and mushroom bed culture is performed to artificially culture Pleurotus ostreatus.
