Disclosed are a method for estimating a walking state which can autonomously change a walking mode, and an apparatus thereof. The method for estimating a walking state comprises the steps of: obtaining an angle value of a knee joint of a user through a sensor attached to an artificial leg or a leg of the user； determining a pole change pattern for the knee joint based on the angle value of the knee joint； using the pole change pattern and a state machine to estimate a walking step of the user.보행 상태 추정 방법 및 장치가 개시된다. 개시된 보행 상태 추정 방법은 사용자의 의족 또는 다리에 부착된 센서를 통해, 상기 사용자의 슬관절의 각도 값을 획득하는 단계； 상기 슬관절의 각도 값에 기초하여 상기 슬관절에 대한 극점 변화 패턴을 결정하는 단계； 및 상기 극점 변화 패턴 및 상태 머신을 이용하여, 상기 사용자의 보행 단계를 추정하는 단계를 포함한다.
