PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new technology for producing &gamma-aminobutyric acid by fermentation using a microorganism.
SOLUTION: A production method of &gamma-aminobutyric acid from glutamic acid by using a microorganism is provided, wherein the method comprises at least the pre-cultivation step and the fermentation step, the pre-cultivation step is a step for cultivating the microorganisms by using glutamic acid or a salt thereof and converting the glutamic acid or the salt thereof into &gamma-aminobutyric acid, and the fermentation step is performed after the pre-cultivation step and for mixing a fermentation liquid with the microorganism obtained in the pre-cultivation step, which fermentation liquid comprises a growth inhibitory material of the microorganism or a material (such as royal jelly) containing the inhibitory material and the glutamic acid or the salt thereof, and converting the glutamic acid or the salt thereof into &gamma-aminobutyric acid.
