PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an underpants type absorbent article which is easily manufactured even when including an absorbent main body and a covering material and adopting a form to cover the longitudinal direction end part of the absorbent main body with a sheet, and also which has excellent permeability from the longitudinal direction end part of the covering material.
SOLUTION: The underpants type absorbent article 1 has near-end-part gathers formed from composite stretch sections in the neighborhood of the longitudinal direction end part of external layer sheets 21 in the covering material 2. In the composite stretch sections, the external layer sheets 21 and the internal layer sheets 22 are mutually joined by intermittent or continuous joints in the stretching direction of the composite stretch sections and directions intersecting the stretching direction at right angles, and each of the sheets 21 and 22 is formed by forming a plurality of continuously extending gathers across a plurality of elastic members 23, 24. In the internal layer sheets 22, extension areas 22B folded back toward the absorbent main body 3 cover a skin abutment surface of the longitudinal direction end part in the absorbent main body 3.
