The present invention relates to a method and a corresponding apparatus for treating microbial contaminated and/or infectious material in a chamber using a gas, comprising the following steps: - creating a vacuum in the chamber - introducing an amount of gas into the chamber and - monitoring the concentration of the gas in the chamber over time and, when a minimum predetermined value of concentration over time is reached, stopping introducing the gas into the chamber.
