It is provided herein that a polymeric excipient, specifically polyvinyl alcohol, is used as a cryoprotectant to prevent aggregation of PEG-containing particles, optionally in combination with sugar. PEG-containing particles comprising such polymeric excipients are also provided. In one aspect, there is provided a method of preparing a lyophilized or frozen preparation of a composition comprising particles comprising a drug, wherein the particles are coated with PEG, the method comprising an aqueous composition comprising the particles.
