The invention includes methods and compositions for treating an animal to inhibit the incidence and growth of E. coli O157:H7 and other pathogenic bacteria. The treatment method comprises administering a therapeutically effective amount of Lactobacillus acidophilus or one or a combination of a number of other probiotic bacteria to an animal. An alternative treatment method comprises administering a therapeutically effective amount of a lactic acid producing bacterium such as Lactobacillus acidophilus in combination with a lactate utilizing bacterium such as Propionibacterium freudenreichii.Linvention concerne des méthodes et des compositions de traitement dun animal afin dinhiber la fréquence et la croissance de E. coli 0157:H7 ainsi que dautres bactéries pathogènes. La méthode de traitement consiste à administrer une dose thérapeutique efficace de Lactobacillus acidophilus ou une bactérie ou bien une combinaison dun certain nombre de bactéries probiotiques à un animal. Une autre méthode de traitement consiste à administrer une dose thérapeutique efficace dune bactérie produisant de lacide lactique tel que Lactobacillus acidophilus en combinaison avec une bactérie utilisant du lactate telle que Propionibacterium freudenreichii.
