PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a slit lamp microscope which enables examination accuracy to be improved without giving a burden to a subject.SOLUTION: The slit lamp microscope is provided that comprises: an illumination system which has a light source outputting illumination light and irradiates an eye of a subject with observation light with an area reduced by passing through a luminous flux control unit having variable area of an opening； an observation system observing the returning light from the eye of the subject of the observation light； and a control unit for controlling an operation of at least the illumination system. The slit lamp microscope further comprises a slit opening area detection unit for detecting the area of the opening.
