The present invention provides a method for treating or preventing pulmonary hypertension and emphysema with an agent that enhances the activity of FHIT, such as enzastaurin. Methods are included for selecting patients for treatment or for monitoring efficacy of treatment using levels of FHIT and/or BMPR2 and by examining for mutations in FHIT and/or BMPR2. The present invention is based on the evidence that enzastaurine prevents and directs pulmonary hypertension induced in animal model systems towards recovery and that it acts by upregulating FHIT and/or BMPR2.
