The invention relates to a process for preparing water-soluble or water-swellable polymer, a water-soluble or water-swellable polymer obtainable by the process, and a cosmetic, dermatological or pharmaceutical formulation comprising the water-soluble or water-swellable polymers. In a preferred embodiment, up to 99.9 mol% of the free acid group of the resist recurring structural units of the polymer are present emerged from acryloyldimethyltaurate as neutralized alkali metal salt or alkaline earth metal salt, preferably as sodium salt.
