There is provided a method for the production of water which has a measured bacterial level of less than 1 cfu/100ml at 35°C which comprises passing water from a mains supply containing bacteria into a continuously circulating ring system and then adding to the water in the ring system an alkaline metal or alkaline earth metal salt of hypochlorous acid at a pH in the range of 5.0 to 7.0 and maintaining the supplied water containing bacteria in contact with HOCl for a sufficient time to reduce the bacterial level to less than 1 cfu/100ml at 35°C. The bacteria free water can be used for medical purposes, and is of particular use in the cleaning and rinsing of contaminated endoscopes.Linvention porte sur un procédé de production deau dont le niveau bactérien mesuré est de moins de 1 cfu/100 ml à 35°C. Ledit procédé comporte des opérations consistant à faire passer leau dune alimentation en eau courante contenant des bactéries dans un système annulaire à circulation continue, puis à ajouter à leau dans le système annulaire un sel de métal alcalin ou de métal alcalinoterreux dacide hypochloreux à un pH dans la plage allant de 5,0 à 7,0 et à conserver leau alimentée contenant des bactéries en contact avec HOCl pendant un laps de temps suffisant pour réduire le niveau bactérien à moins de 1 cfu/100 ml à 35°C. Leau exempte de bactéries, qui peut être utilisée pour des objectifs médicaux, est particulièrement utile dans le nettoyage et le rinçage dendoscopes contaminés.
