A process comprising treating a paste of lignocellulosic material with 0.5 to 5% by weight, based on dry matter of cellulose, of an oxidizing agent selected from the group consisting of hydrogen peroxide, hypochlorite, hypochlorous acid and any combination thereof, in the presence of 0.01 to 0.1% by weight, referred to as dry lignocellulosic material, of a transition metal as a catalyst, at a temperature of 60 to 90 ° C, at unpH of 2 to 6 and for a time of 30 minutes to 4 hours, to form a treated lignocellulosic material that has a viscosity equal to or less than about 17 cp and that has reducing functional groups selected from the group consisting of aldehyde functional groups and of the aldehyde type at positions C1 and C6, in which the amount of functional groups aldehyde and of the aldehyde type in the C1 position is greater than about 75%.Un proceso que comprende tratar una pasta de material lignocelulósico con 0,5 a 5% en peso, referido a materiallignocelulósico seco, de un agente oxidante seleccionado del grupo que consiste en peróxido de hidrógeno,hipoclorito, ácido hipocloroso y cualquier combinación de los mismos, en presencia de 0,01 a 0,1% en peso, referidoa material lignocelulósico seco, de un metal de transición como catalizador, a una temperatura de 60 a 90ºC, a unpH de 2 a 6 y durante un tiempo de 30 minutos a 4 horas, para formar un material lignocelulósico tratado que tieneuna viscosidad igual o menor que aproximadamente 17 cp y que tiene grupos funcionales reductores seleccionadosdel grupo que consiste en grupos funcionales aldehído y del tipo aldehído en las posiciones C1 y C6, en el que lacantidad de grupos funcionales aldehído y del tipo aldehído en la posición C1 es mayor que aproximadamente 75%.
