An apparatus (1) for climbing a vertical member and engaging/disengaging a portion of the vertical member is disclosed. The apparatus comprises of a first frame (2) and a second frame (3) spaced apart from each other. At least a first clamping mechanism is provided to be connected to the first frame (2) for enabling engagement/disengagement of the first frame (2) to a first portion of the vertical member. At least a second clamping mechanism is provided to be connected to the second frame (3) for enabling engagement/disengagement of the second frame (3) to a second portion of the vertical member. At least one reciprocating means (4) provided for connecting the first frame (2) and the second frame (3) for deviating the distance between the first frame (2) and the second frame (3) by extending or retracting one of the first frame or the second frame with respect to the other frame, wherein the frame that extends/retracts against the other frame is regressively engaged from the vertical member during the extension/retraction. A cutting mechanism (7) is provided to be connected to the first frame (2) and configured for disengaging a desired portion of the vertical member.
