The present invention provides a system for the automatic determination of the position and orientation of a fruit, said fruit comprising at least one rotation axis. This system comprises two rollers (1) mounted with respect to each other such that a fruit placed on the rollers is supported by the walls of the rollers. The system further comprises a supporting plate (2), which prevents a fruit (14) placed on the rollers from falling off. Preferably, the rollers are positioned or designed such that a fruit (14) placed on the rollers exerts a gravitational force on the supporting plate (2). It was found that a fruit on the rollers, which is leaning on the supporting plate (2), adopts a predictable and stable rotation movement a short time after a rotation is imposed on the fruit by rotating one or both of the rollers. For instance, an apple will either rotate around its crown stalk axis or around an axis perpendicular to the crown stalk axis when imposing a rotation on the apple using a system according to the present invention. The knowledge of the predictable rotation movements of said fruit allows for the automatic determination of the orientation and position of the fruit within a short time interval using a vision system (15) suitable for the acquisition and analysis of images of the rotating fruit.
