The present invention provides an HIV-1 vaccine immunogen. Some of the immunogens contain soluble gp140-derived proteins that contain a modified N-terminus of the HR1 region in gp41. Some of the immunogens contain HIV-1 Env derived trimeric proteins presented on an 8 nanoparticle platform. The invention also provides a method of using an HIV-1 vaccine immunogen to elicit an immune response or to treat an HIV infection.
