A spacer for maintaining separation between adjacent spinous processes has a collapsed and an expanded configuration. The collapsed configuration presents a smaller profile to facilitate minimally invasive implantation of the spacer. An exemplary interspinous spacer (10) includes a blocking member 15 and arms 11, 12, 13 and 14. When the spacer is in its relaxed (expaded) configuration it resembles an H, with arms 11, 12 , 13 and 14 being the legs of the H, and blocking member 15 being the crossbar. To use the spacer, the arms are manipulated to be parallel to the blocking member, manipulating the spacer to its collapsed (implantable) configuration.
