PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an amphipathic copolymer which can make it harder to stay a conditioning component in healthy hair with a low degree of a damage while staying the conditioning component in a portion with a high degree of a damage of hair, and enables smooth combability and a method for producing the same, and to provide a hair cosmetic composition using the amphipathic copolymer.SOLUTION: A method for producing an amphipathic copolymer includes polymerizing a predetermined monomer (a) and a monomer (b) with a predetermined compounding ratio to obtain a reaction intermediate, and then copolymerizing a predetermined monomer (c) and a monomer (d) with the reaction intermediate to produce an amphipathic copolymer having an HLB value of 10 to 16.
