Said container conveyor has a plurality of container carrier elements, which have a flat surface and receptacles therein for containers such that the containers do not protrude beyond the flat surface at all or protrude beyond the flat surface less than 5 mm, preferably less than 3 mm. A container cover covers the flat surface during the conveying of a container carrier element from one chamber into the adjacent chamber.
