The present invention relates to a method for activating said bacteria comprising exposing a live lactic acid bacterium to a preparation comprising citrate, wherein said bacteria have the ability to utilize citrate as an external electron acceptor. The invention further relates to a method of enhancing the activity of certain live bacteria in a mammal. More specifically, the present invention relates to improving awakening of specific lactic acid bacteria from freeze-dried conditions.
