The present invention relates to a novel strain of lactic acid bacterium, and more specifically to a novel strain of Lactobacillus reuteri that can utilize ethanolamine. This feature allows bacteria to compete for the same substrates as pathogenic ethanolamine-utilizing pathogens, thereby presenting an effective means to combat infections resulting from such pathogenic bacteria. Also provided are methods of selecting additional ethanolamine-utilizing lactic acid bacteria, as well as other methods and uses including the novel strains and other ethanolamine-utilizing lactic acid bacteria.
