The present invention comprises a surgical apparatus comprising a body, an ultrasonic transducer, a drive shaft, an acoustic waveguide, a pivot section, an end actuator and a stiffening member. The ultrasonic transducer aims to convert electrical energy into ultrasonic vibrations. the shaft couples the end actuator and body to each other. the acoustic waveguide is coupled to the transducer. The hinge section is operable to flex so as to deflect the end actuator from a longitudinal axis defined by the drive shaft. The stiffening element is selectively operable to stiffen the pivot section and thereby prevent end actuator deflection, preventing the flexibility of the pivot section.
