A method for producing a phenolphthalein compound comprises: reacting a phenolic compound of the formula (I): wherein R1 is a hydrogen or a C1-C12 hydrocarbyl group, with a phthalic anhydride compound of the formula (II): wherein R2 is a hydrogen, a C1-C12 hydrocarbyl group, or a halogen, in the presence of a heterogeneous catalyst and a promoter to form a reaction mixture comprising a phenolphthalein compound of the formula (III): wherein each R1 is independently a hydrogen or a C1-C12 hydrocarbyl group and R2 is a hydrogen, a C1-C12 hydrocarbyl group, or a halogen wherein the heterogeneous catalyst comprises, on a porous support, a calcination product of a heteropolyacid composition.L’invention concerne une méthode de production dun composé de phénolphtaléine, qui consiste à mettre en réaction un composé phénolique de formule dans laquelle R1 est un hydrogène ou un groupe hydrocarbyle C1-C12, avec un composé danhydride phtalique de formule dans laquelle R2 est un hydrogène, un groupe hydrocarbyle C1-C12 ou un halogène, en présence dun catalyseur hétérogène et dun promoteur, pour former un mélange réactif comprenant un composé de phénolphtaléine de formule dans laquelle chaque R1 est indépendamment un hydrogène ou un groupe hydrocarbyle C1-C12, et R2 est un hydrogène, un groupe hydrocarbyle C1-C12 ou un halogène. Le catalyseur hétérogène comprend, sur un support poreux, un produit de calcination dune composition hétéropolyacide.
