The present invention is a method for the enzymatic reduction of cystine to cysteine, comprising (i) active glutathione reductase (EC1.8.1.7)； (ii) cofactor； and (iii) glutathione. Contacting a reducing solution with cystine； as well as recovering a composition comprising cysteine, wherein the reducing solution has a pH of at least 6 during contact with cystine.
