Disclosed herein is a method for wound healing which comprises the steps of: (a) topically applying on a non-human animal’s skin a composition comprising at least one oxidant, wherein the at least one oxidant is chosen from hydrogen peroxide, carbamide peroxide and benzoyl peroxide, and at least one photoactivator capable of activating the oxidant, wherein the at least one photoactivator is eosin; and (b) exposing said skin of step (a) to actinic light for a time sufficient for said photoactivator to cause activation of said oxidant. Said composition may further comprise a hydrophilic gelling agent selected from glucose, modified starch, methyl cellulose, carboxymethyl cellulose, propyl cellulose, hydroxypropyl cellulose, carbopol polymers, alginic acid, sodium alginate, potassium alginate, ammonium alginate, calcium alginate, agar, carrageenan, locust bean gum, pectin, and gelatin.
