The procedure, in which plants in root blocks move down a ramp (6) and are delivered one at a time into a furrow (3), uses a planting machine with a clamp (20) that grips the plant at the lowest end of the row by its root block and twists it to separate it from the adjoining block before moving towards the furrow. The twisting motion is provided by a power cylinder (38) that rotates the clamp support (27) relative to its oscillating head through an angle of about 15 degrees.
