A process for the preparation of 3,7-bis (dimethylamino) phenothiazine-5-ylium iodide, which is obtained in high purity while being very simple to carry out and leading to high yields. The method uses phenothiazine as a starting material and comprises the following steps: treating phenothiazine with molecular iodine, and b) treating the reaction medium obtained directly from step a) with dimethylamine.
