FIELD: medicine.SUBSTANCE: method of monitoring the movement of a subject is carried out using a monitoring system. Monitoring system (10) comprises at least one video camera, configured to continuously receive the video image of subject (12) under normal and darkened room conditions, motion detection unit (40) and segmentation unit (42). Groups of respiratory movements and movements of body parts of the subject are identified in the received video image of the subject. Difference signal is calculated based on a comparison between the current image and reference images in the time domain from the received video image of the subject, and the group of the subject’s respiratory movements is identified on the basis of the difference signal. Groups of non-respiratory movements are identified and with the possibility of generating a mask of the movement of the whole body. Segmentation of the received video image of the subject is carried out on the basis of the identified groups of movements of the subject in the received video image. Segmentation is performed on the received video image of the upper part of the body from body parts based on the identified group of respiratory movements of the subject. Segmentation of the upper body in the video image includes identification of the head and torso in the video image based on the proportions of the body and the identified groups. Segmentation is performed on the received video image of a detailed body part from body parts on the basis of the identified group of non-respiratory movements and the generated mask of the movement of the whole body.
