An apparatus 10 for roasting coffee beans comprises: a chamber 12 in which a supply of coffee beans can be received for roasting said chamber having an outlet for roasted coffee beans means 15 for heating air and means 20 for driving heated air into the chamber for roasting the coffee beans and for lifting the coffee beans to and through said outlet. The air driving means and chamber are configured and arranged so that the coffee beans circulate generally horizontally about the periphery of the chamber. A controller is also provided which is configured to control the air driving means to drive air into the chamber at a first rate to circulate the beans as they roast and at a second higher rate to carry the beans towards and through the outlet. The device may also comprise coffee grinding and brewing means (figure 5). Packaging for green coffee beans comprising a detachable filter for the device is also described.
