Methods and materials useful for applying moxifloxacin to the ear are described. The method comprises delivering a composition containing one or more thickening agents and moxifloxacin or a salt thereof to the epidermal surface of the eardrum through the ear canal. The composition is delivered to the eardrum in a fluid form and has a viscosity sufficient to allow moxifloxacin to be placed in the eardrum after delivery to the eardrum.
