Disclosed is a method of enhancing endoscopic image data in real-time. A plurality of digital image frames, 204, are received from the imaging section of an endoscope at a predetermined frame rate and enhanced using an active look-up table (LUT) that applies a first transform to the digital image frames. The enhanced image frames are then displayed at the predetermined frame rate in real time. In parallel to this process an optimised LUT table is generated, 208, by analysing a predetermined number of the video frames received from the endoscope, 206, and updating the active LUT with a new optimised LUT. The active LUT is then continually optimised and updated after a predetermined number of frames thus ensuring that the LUT is regularly optimised based on the currently received video frames. The optimised LUT table may be generated using gamma correction, histogram equalisation, contrast limited adaptive histogram equalisation (CLAHE), fixed contrast enhancement or feature segmentation by colour properties. The use of LUTs allows the endoscopic images to be enhanced in real time whilst the LUT can be adapted in real time as received image parameters vary.
