A use of phthalides of manufacturing drugs for improving the oxygen-releasing ability of oxygenated hemoglobin to organs and peripheral tissues in human bodies is disclosed. The phthalides form at least one hydrogen bond with the Arg141 residue of the hemoglobin α subunit, thus stabilizing the oxygenated hemoglobin in the low oxygen affinity T form and facilitating the oxygen release to organs and peripheral tissues.
