The mechano-receptors of the tongue are stimulated by the physical shape of the confectionery item 20. In this embodiment, the confectionery item 20 has a vertical oval shape with shaped spaced horizontal ridges 22 formed in the surface of the confectionery item 20. The ridges 22 comprise curved corners. Other shapes are possible for the confectionery item 20, for forming as lollipops or (standalone) lollies/jellies/candy, which can be hard, soft or chewy. The shapes are threedimensional shapes chosen to provide the desired mechanical stimulant effect. The shapes can include points 31, spikes 32, shaped surfaces including pyramids 34, pentagon shaped protrusions 35, flat triangle surfaces 36, hexagons 36, sharp edges, smooth edges, and irregularly shaped items, which in the embodiments shown are disposed around the surfaces of a generally spherical, cubic, pyramidal, cuboid base. An additional possible mechanical stimulant is the texture of the confectionery item, which can be smooth, include sharp corners, protrusions, ridges, corrugations, channels, and irregular or a combination of textures.1/1 10 20 22 50 31 ~ FIGURE 1 3 34 35 33 32 FIGURE 2 31
