The invention relates to a 3-hydroxy-4-methoxybenzoic acid (HMA) for inhibiting the skin melanin formation. It can be used to inhibit the secretion of melanin in skin cells and regulate melanin-related genes and proteins expression comprising tyrosinase, DOPA oxidase, melanocortin 1 receptor (MC1R), microphthalmia associated transcription factor (MITF), tyrosinase related protein-2 (TRP-2), and tyrosinase related protein-1 (TRP-1). Furthermore, it has the ability to scavenge DPPH and ABTS radicals.
