Disclosed are a method and an eye test system for operating a data processing system for displaying an eye test pattern on a computer display to a patient during an eye test. The method includes causing the data processing system to display an eye test pattern in a chart area of a computer display that is controlled by the data processing system and characterized by luminance in an area that does not display the eye test pattern. The intensity of the light emitted from the computer display is measured in the sensor area outside of the chart area using the display luminance sensor. The brightness of the computer display is adjusted to provide a light level within a predetermined range of light levels based on the measured light intensity.
