Fatty acid analogues of the general formula I:R1-[X i-CH2]n-COOR2are provided, wherein R1 is a C1-C24 alkene with one or moredouble bonds and/or with one or more triple bonds, and/or; aC1-C24 alkyne, and/or, a C1-C24 alkyl, or a C1-C24 alkylsubstituted in one or several positions with one or morecompounds selected from the group comprising fluoride,chloride, hydroxy, C1-C4 alkoxy, C1-C4 alkylthio, C2-C5 acyloxyor C1-C4 alkyl, and wherein R2 represents hydrogen or C1-C4alkyl, and; wherein n is an integer from 1 to 12, and; whereini is an odd number and indicates the position relative toCOOR2, and; wherein X independent of each other are selectedfrom the group comprising, O, S, SO, SO2, Se and CH2, and; withthe proviso that at least one of the X is not CH2. The fattyacid analogues can be used for the treatment and/or preventionof inflammatory disorders. Methods for enhancing theendogenous production of interleukin-10 (IL-10) andsuppressing the production of interleukin-2 in mammalian cellsor tissues and a method for inhibiting the proliferation ofstimulated peripheral mononuclear cells using the fatty acidanalogues are provided.
