The luer fixation device (10) includes a luer adapter (70) having a septum (80) and a catheter hood (72), the luer adapter further being a wedge for receiving the base (92) of the catheter (90). It has a seal (82). The luer fixation device further advances the base of the catheter through the septum, thereby allowing the probe base (53 to be configured to seat the base of the catheter on the wedge seal of the luer adapter when the catheter tip is inserted into the patient. A catheter threader (50) having a slidably received inserter body (20). The catheter threader further includes a needle adapter (100) having a probe and a needle threaded through the catheter to assist in inserting the catheter into the patient. Following insertion of the catheter, the catheter threader is retracted into the inserter body, thereby withdrawing the needle from the catheter and shielding the sharp tip of the needle on at least one of the inserter body and the catheter threader.
