Provided are: a process for producing a poly(arylene sulfide) (PAS) while an organic amide solvent is efficiently recovered at low energy cost without requiring the use of any organic solvent from a waste liquid resulting from the cleaning, with a water-containing solvent, of a raw-material mixture comprising the PAS and the organic amide solvent; the process for PAS production wherein the amount of water to be supplied when cleaning the raw-material mixture with a water-containing solvent is reduced; and a PAS produced by either of the processes. The processes according to the present invention each comprise a step in which a raw-material mixture comprising a PAS and an organic amide solvent is mixed with a water-containing solvent to clean the PAS, a step in which the resultant mixture is subjected to solid-liquid separation, thereby obtaining a separated liquid, and a step in which the separated liquid is separated by heating into a distillate vapor, in which the content of the organic amide solvent is low
