A method and connector for detecting a change in tension of a taut wire fence system (6) is disclosed. The method includes attaching a first wire (11) to one side of a connector and a second wire (10) to the other side to form part of the fence. The connector contains a force sensor (5) in communication with a processor (20). The wires are then tensioned. During normal operation the force exerted on the connector is monitored for change by the processor, activating an alarm if such a change is detected that is outside predetermined limits. The connector includes a main body member having a first attachment portion (3) at one end of the member and a second attachment portion (4) at the opposite end of the member. The attachment portions are configured to attach to the wires of a fence system. The sensor is located on the main body between the first and second attachment portions and is connected to a processor. A transmitter is used to transmit data regarding the sensor state, via the processor, to an alarm and/or monitoring system (21). Power and data may be connected to the connector through an inductive coupling system.
