Disclosed is a buffered pharmaceutical oral formulation comprising nicotine in any form, and comprising a buffer comprising at least one amino acid and/or a salt thereof, and further comprising a pH-adjusting compound sufficient to raise the pH of the saliva by 0.2-4 pH units when the pH-adjusting capacity of said at least one amino acid and/or a salt thereof is insufficient, and wherein the at least one amino acid is/are chosen among Arginine, Asparagine, Glutamic acid, Glutamine, Histamine, Isoleucine, Leucine, Lysine, Methionine, Ornithine, Phenylalanine, Serine, Threonine, Valine, Cysteic acid and N-Glycylglycine. Also disclosed is the use of the oral formulation in the preparation of a medicament for delivering nicotine and a system to reduce the urge to smoke and help addiction to cigarettes, smoking and nicotine.
