The hand-held, battery powered vegetation trimmer comprises a battery pack (4) which powers an electric motor (12) which rotates an output (22) and cutting line (30). The line is held in a line support assembly (28). The batteries are preferably rechargeable nickel-cadmium or lead acid and are contained in a switch assembly housing (2). A reduction gear (24) is provided between the motor output and the line support. This reduces the speed at which the line is rotated and reduces the power consumption of the trimmer.
