Prodn. of an animal feedstuff from waste material contg. cellulose and/or lignin comprises (a) cutting the waste materials into =2 in pieces, (b) dividing the material in 2 parts, (c) conveying one part to be mixed with H3PO4, HCl, H2SO4 or their mixtures, (d) conveying the other part to be mixed with Ca(OH)2, NaOH, KOH, NH4OH or their mixtures, (e) mixing the acidic and basic parts, resulting in a more digestable material, water (20-60 wt %) is converted to steam by the heat of reaction (f) forming the material into pellets, cubes or blocks. Pref. materials are straw, stover, cotton gin waste, manure, vegetable waste, wood shavings, bagasse, and corn cobs. The materials are conveyed by belt, screw, or pneumatic conveyor, and mixed in a continuous mixer. Steps (c) and (d) take place at 20-150 degrees F. A relatively inexpensive method, by defraying the cost of adding mineral salts, which obviates the need for removal or neutralisation of added chemicals.
