A method for reducing aggregate content in a protein formulation having a target protein comprises contacting the protein formulation with a thioheterocyclic cation to form a mixture, contacting the mixture with at least one functional solid and excess thiol. Removing the heterocyclic cation and optionally contacting the mixture simultaneously or sequentially with at least one additional functional solid to further reduce the aggregate content of the protein formulation.
