A turbine-engine compressor extends along an axis (12, fig 1) and comprises an annular casing (34, fig 1, 2) and an annular row of variable pitch blades 26. Each blade comprises a pivot 30 at a radially external end that is mounted in an orifice of the casing. The pivot is connected to a first end of a link 36, the second end of which is mounted pivotally on a control ring 38, which can pivot axially with respect to the casing. The pivot axes of first and second links 36a, 36b on the control ring are axially offset from one another. The second end of the second link is mounted so it can slide in a recess 66 with a complementary shape in a connecting member 60, which is mounted to pivot with respect to the control ring about a radial axis 62, so as to form a sliding pivot connection between the second link and the control ring. Preferably the circumferential distance between the pivot axes of the ends of the first link is different from the circumferential distance between the pivot axes of the ends of the sec
