Glyceryl tri- [4-phenylbutyrate] (HPN-100) for use in a method of treating a nitrogen retention disorder in a subject, wherein the method comprises adjusting the dosage of glyceryl tri- [4-phenylbutyrate] (HPN -100) to achieve a fasting blood ammonia level that is less than or equal to half the upper limit of normal (ULN) for blood ammonia ale, where the dosage adjustment comprises: a) measuring a level of fasting blood ammonia for the subject； b) compare the level of fasting blood ammonia with the ULN for blood ammonia； and c) administer to the subject an increased dosage of glyceryl tri- [4-phenylbutyrate] (HPN-100) if the level of fasting blood ammonia has a value that is greater than half of the ULN.Gliceril tri-[4-fenilbutirato] (HPN-100) para su uso en un método de tratar un trastorno de retención de nitrógeno en un sujeto, en donde el método comprende ajustar la dosificación de gliceril tri-[4-fenilbutirato] (HPN-100) para alcanzar un nivel de amoniaco en sangre en ayunas que es menor o igual a la mitad del límite superior del normal (ULN) para ale amoniaco en sangre, en donde el ajuste de la dosificación comprende: a) medir un nivel de amoniaco en sangre en ayunas para el sujeto； b) comparar el nivel de amoniaco en sangre en ayunas con el ULN para el amoniaco en sangre； y c) administrar al sujeto una dosificación aumentada de gliceril tri-[4-fenilbutirato] (HPN-100) si el nivel de amoniaco en sangre en ayunas tiene un valor que es mayor de la mitad del ULN.
