The present invention includes human somatostatin (e.g., a region that is at least 85% homologous to human somatostatin, and a region that is at least 85% homologous to human serum albumin, or a region having a partial amino acid sequence of human serum albumin (e.g. SST-14 or SST-28) and human serum albumin fusion protein, wherein the linker peptide sequence may be present between the somatostatin moiety and the somatostatin moiety or between the somatostatin moiety and the albumin moiety. Also disclosed are constructs in which the somatostatin moiety comprises a plurality of somatostatin sequence tandem repeats. In selected embodiments, the arrangement of the somatostatin moiety and the albumin moiety can be altered, and such sequences can affect the binding and effectiveness of the disclosed fusion proteins. Also disclosed are methods of making and using the above-described constructs. The somatostatin-albumin fusion protein showed improved stability when incubated in rat plasma in vitro, and extended plasma half-life in vivo compared to free somatostatin.
