The device has multiple shells (16) arranged on one after another on a support. Each shell is connected to the support by a hinge permitting the shell to pivot with respect to the support between an initial position and an obstacle avoidance position. A biasing unit comprises an inflatable flexible envelope (48) that is deformed when each shell is pivoted into the obstacle avoidance position when a force is exerted by an obstacle on each shell and to exert force to the shell returning to the initial position when the obstacle does not provide additional effort. The inflatable flexible envelope is appeared as a roll that is made from a plastic tube.
